TREES FOR LIFE

The Trees for Life conservation project, implemented in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society of Galle,  established a unique indigenous tree nursery in the breathtaking Hiyare rainforest.

Over 175,000 trees whare raised and distributed for forest restoration, and to help re-establish home gardens for tsunami affected families. Six community owned and managed nurseries supply trees to the main nursery providing valuable livelihood income for the families of the women who run the nurseries. The project conducted conservation awareness programmes – over 12,000 school children have participated in environmental and biodiversity protection workshops.

You can visit the Trees for Life programme, situated next to the picturesque and peaceful Hiyare reservoir, and play a part in conserving this beautiful area;
  • Plant a tree.
  • Walk along the nature trail to explore diverse flora & fauna.
  • Take a tranquil boat ride and enjoy the breathtaking scenery.

 Project Period:  2005 - 2009
