2015 International Mountain Day Celebration

On The 10th and 11th of December 2015 International Mountain Day Official Celebration in Sri Lanka Was held at Kitulgala

Theme - Promoting Mountain Products for Better Livelihoods 

"International Mountain Day", was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003 December 11,. The General Assembly "encouraged the international community to organize events at all levels on that day to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development."

International Mountain Day is observed every year with a different theme relevant to sustainable mountain development. FAO is the U.N. organization mandated to lead observance of International Mountain Day. Tourism-related services such as skiing, climbing, cultural heritage or nature trails that allow visitors to discover unique biodiversity are also some of the offerings provided by mountains and mountain communities. If sustainably managed, tourism can provide an opportunity for development in mountain regions. 

Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment together with Sri Lanka Institute of National Tourist Guides Lecturers (SLINTGL) & Sri Lankan SEALS organized the two day program to commemorate International Mountain Day at Kitulgala.

30 Members from the SL Tourist Guides Lecturers (SLINTGL) participated in the program Dr. Siril Wijesunda (Former Director General of Peradeniya Botanical gardens) Mr.Kalum Nalinda (Zoo Archaeology Researcher, Post graduate institute) Mr.Ajantha Palihawadana (Coordinator Responsible Tourism Partnership) Dr. W.K.Athula Gnanapala (Senior Lecturer & Head of the Department , Department  of Tourism Management Sabaragamuwa University ) And Mr. P.P Hettiarchi  (Tourist Guides Lecturers , Tourist Board ) participated as rescores speaker’s
